You link a relevant product or topic in Amazon that your visitors may be intererested in and they buy it. You will make a percentage of the sale. Many of your visitors will most likely already have Amazon accounts which makes it even easier for them to buy. Amazon.com also lets you shop around and has many great deals, another reason why people are using it. If you are interested in affiliates to add revenue to your site keep Amazon in mind.
